Person of Interest (A Celeste Eagan Mystery) by Emery Harper

Posted by [email protected] on August 29, 2016 at 8:00 AM Comments comments (0)

Follow the zany antics of Celeste Eagan: prep school theater teacher by day, amateur sleuth by night. The first book in a new series from author Emery Harper, full of mystery and mayhem.

Just last week, I was a regular single mom and drama teacher at Peytonville Prep with a semi-normal life. The only real drama I had to deal with involved my football-coach ex and his hussy girlfriend. And maybe deciding if I should take that full-time principal/actress job at the local playhouse.

Everything changed when I discovered my boss hanging in his office. The suicide turned out to be a murder and my ex went suspiciously MIA. I tried to find some answers, but all that got me was labeled a person of interest by the attractively uptight Detective Shaw Muldoon. Not exactly the way I was hoping to interest him, if you know what I mean.

Now my life is plenty exciting, if you count a stint in jail, several attempted break-ins, more dead bodies and the odd exploding car. Did I mention I also have my own personal stalker? It's becoming pretty clear that if I don't unmask the killer soon, my life won't ever be boring again…it will be over.

Janet's five star review:

This book really checks a LOT of my favorite (mystery) boxes. Lovely lady sleuth (check), great story (check), funny (check), hot yummy detective (double check). A new favorite for sure. This is the first Emery Harper book I read.

Celeste lives with her daughter Paige after her divorce from Colin. They both work at a prestigious school, she a theater teacher and he a coach, although the fact Colin's girlfriend Naomi works there as well is not too great. When the principal Chad is found dead - by Celeste - life changes really fast. The very handsome detective Muldoon has his eye on Celeste as an Person of Interest and Celeste keeps getting in his way when she decides to do some sleuthing of her own. An exploding car, someone searching her house and taking shots at her complicate her life, and the tingles she feels whenever Muldoon is near confuse her.

I like Celeste as the heroine and Shaw Muldoon is the perfect stern but attentive hero. There is some great banter between them and attraction... There is also her best friend, Eli, and intelligent daughter Paige. And Muldoon has a big family we as yet know nothing about.

The perfect start of - I hope - at least some more books.

For those lovers of romantic mystery I highly recommend this one.

No Strings Attached (Lexi Carmichael Mystery #8) by Julie Moffett

Oops, I did it again…

Leave it to me, Lexi Carmichael, to become a target for an elite organization of cyber criminals simply by being in the wrong place at the right time. As if I weren't already freaking out about planning my best friend's bachelorette party, I now have to keep my eyes peeled for people trying to kill me.

After accidentally intercepting a dangerous hack into the NSA and discovering the involvement of a foreign country in said hack, things begin to get seriously complicated. Diplomats, danger and spies, oh, my!

With Slash and my loyal friends by my side, I'm in a race against time to stop a team of sophisticated hackers on a deadly mission. My team of geeks is brilliant…but derailing an international plot for revenge will take everything we've got.

Janet's Five Star Review:

The Lexi Carmichael-series is one of my favorite series. The stories are very well plotted and crafted and the characters develop over the course of the series. Number 8 already and still going very very strong.

Lexi is attending HACK CON when she stumbles into a situation where it is clear national security is threatened. After an attempt on her life (again!) the situation escalates and soon Lexi and Slash are at it again to save the US against a very real threat, of course with the help of their friends.

During all this, Lexi is still planning Basia's bachelorette party and taking her duties as Maid of honor very seriously. I almost peed my pants laughing so hard at a very particular scene at a bridal shop. What I enjoyed most was the fact that Lexi and Slash really are center stage in this installment and that their relationship is growing. If you have not read one of these books yet, you are missing out on a great series!

Quote without trying to spoil :-) :

“Wow. I’m not sure what to say. Was there really an ambulance, fire truck and an insurance adjuster involved?” “Unfortunately, yes.”

Shannon's 5 Star Review:

Having been born and raised in Alabama, I can attest to the manners one is raised with. This was a wonderful read, but I must warn you, it is a bit of a cliffhanger.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book even if I did want to smack some sense into the main characters from time to time.

There are the ups and downs you'd expect along with some sweetness thrown in, and it's not just from the tea. This story truly gives you the "feels" and you'll love every moment.

Kris Calvert it's a new top me author and I have to say, I will be reading more.

 Cocky. Commanding. Powerful. Relentless.

Those four words all summed up West Rykman perfectly.

So did filthy, dirty, sexy, and addictive.

He was supposed to be my one night stand...not my new marketing client.

He was definitely not supposed to be back inside my pants, not that anybody told him that.

I knew one thing: What West Rykman wanted, West Rykman got.

 And he wanted me.

What happens in Vegas... might just make you stay.

5 Star review

This was my first book by Emma that wasn't part of the Holly Woods Files and I absolutely adored it!

Mia is on point as a person and extremely relatable to me me. She over thought everything. Seriously, what woman doesn't over think everything especially when things are going so well and the guy seems too good to be true?

She envisions every worst case scenario and it made her feel real to me because that is exactly what I do.

West... oh west is one hot piece of man meat and always knows what to say. Knows when to step back and when to push Mia. No matter how many times she tries to push him away and keep things on a professional level he is there to remind her how perfect they are together.

Just beware that you will want to dive into 'Stripped Down' as soon as your finish this book. This is Beck's book, West's business partner. And there is a bit of a cliff hanger.

Going Down by Katherine Stevens

The plan for Cici Carrington was to steadily climb UP the corporate ladder, and hopefully do so without her skirt tucked into the back of her underpants. Unfortunately, there was no contingency plan for the aftermath of spending a night trapped in an elevator with a suit-wearing Elevator Sex God named Cole Danvers. A one…or two-time dalliance wouldn’t normally throw off the course of someone’s life…unless you find out you have to work together the next day.

To further complicate matters, Cici’s best friend is also her Human Resources Director. She has to hide her secret from every person she knows. Her only confidant is her one-eyed cat, and his loyalty is tenuous at best. Toss in an accidental mugging, a bungled disguise, secret meetings, and unintentional arson, and Cici’s beautiful, careful plan has fallen by the wayside.

Perhaps there aren’t any hard and fast rules in life. Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too. Sometimes following the rules doesn’t get you ahead.

And perhaps sometimes you can get off between floors…

What do you do when you are stuck in an elevator with a hot stranger?

You have elevator sex of course.

What do you do when you find out that the guy you slept in the elevator with is your new assistant?

You runaway and try to hide your identity while trying to think of ways to escape the country.

What do you do when you can't stop seeing this man and your best friend is the HR director for your company?

You end up leading yourself into a tangled web of lies, even if you are a bad liar.

I haven't laughed this hard while reading a book in a very long time. Plus, all of the euphemisms Katherine came up with just amazed me. I think my favorite with 'womb broom'.

When everything went down (see what I did there?) and their secret wasn't such a secret anymore will CiCi and Cole be able to handle the situation together or will CiCi do what she does best and run away?

The Hysterics: A Standalone Rock Star Romance by Kristen Hope Mazzola

Once upon a time, I was Fallon Dunbar.

Rock and roll, drugs, and bad decisions were the life I lived.

I’d fallen so deep into the dark rabbit hole that I was certain I would never make it out alive. People like me didn’t get second chances. People like me didn’t get lifted from the darkness. So when the opportunity showed up, I had to take it.

I walked away from everything I loved, everything that was killing me, and I became Fae Dunham. After that, I hid behind makeup, long sleeves, and a closed-off heart.

All was well until I met Dane Pearson. He wasn’t convinced of the new me, and whenever he was near, I felt like the old me, the real me, filled with passion and a love for music. Every day was a struggle of self-discovery. Every day was a fight to not fall back down the rabbit hole. And every day, somehow, someway, I slowly began to discover what it meant to find myself.

It was a hysteric ride, but it was ours. And I wouldn’t change a thing.

Colt & Serena: A Hysterics Companion Novella (The Hysterics Book2) by Kristen Hope Mazzola

**This Book is a Standalone** It is a companion novella to The Hysterics, a rock star romance.

Gay-for-pay, it's not just a guy thing. I was knee deep in that seedy world for far too long. It was time, time to break away from that lifestyle and make something of myself that I could be proud of. Nothing else mattered once that tattoo gun was buzzing in my hand, that is until Colt - the guitar player from The Hysterics - waltz into the shop I was apprenticing for. He turned my world upside down and I wouldn't change a damn thing.

***18+ for sexual situations, cursing, and adult content.***

Sleuthing for a Living (Mackenzie & Mackenzie PI Mysteries Book 1) by Jennifer L. Hart

Posted by [email protected] on June 23, 2016 at 11:35 AM Comments comments (0)

As a young single parent, Mackenzie Elizabeth Taylor has struggled to provide for her teenage daughter. She finally catches a break when she inherits half of an apartment building in Boston from her uncle Al...along with his P.I. business. So what if she doesn’t know the first thing about investigation or if their hot-but-crabby downstairs tenant is a police detective who’s looking for any excuse to handcuff her? Her daughter, Mac the computer whiz, has her back. And these two girls don’t know the meaning of the word quit—not even when their first case takes an unexpected turn.

The man Mackenzie's been hired to follow in a custody case seems to have upset more than just her client when she spies another person tailing him—a mysterious man Mackenzie would bet is up to no good. But when her mark suddenly winds up dead, and her first and only client is accused of his murder, Mackenzie vows to find the truth. Only one problem: she doesn’t know where to start…or when to draw the line. Who is the mysterious man she spotted tailing the victim? Is he the killer? Is she in over her head, or will she uncover the secrets someone killed to keep hidden? Mackenzie and Mackenzie are on the case, and the world of private investigation will never be the same.

Janet's 5 Star review:

What a great start to a new series.

Mackenzie Taylor had a daughter at age 16 and has looked after Mac as a single mom for 16 years. When her uncle Albert dies he leaves Mackenzie and her mother his big house (including tenants) and Mackenzie decides to move in. After finding Alberts manuscript 'Working Man's Guide to Sleuthing for a Living' Mackenzie decides to try and take up his profession as a PI.

Luckily, older attorney Len is willing to give Mackenzie a chance and her first job. With the help of computer wiz Mac and using her wits Mackenzie starts her first stakeout, only to be dragged into a murder case. Handsome Detective (and neighbor) Hunter Black is against her taking up the job as PI and life gets more crazy after her mother decides to move in after leaving her husband and Mac has questions about her dad. Coffee just isn't enough!

I think this has the potential to be an enjoyable new favorite series. The characters are likeable, there is a love interest and a woman brave enough to start a new profession when strapped for money.

Pirate Bound: A Prequel (Telepathic Space Pirates) by Carysa Locke

A desperate gamble…

Sanah would do anything to protect her little sister, even if it means taking refuge with ruthless pirates. But the psychically Talented pirates terrorizing Commonwealth space are not quite the monsters she has been led to believe. When Sanah's empathic gift shows her the truth behind the stories, she is no longer certain who the villains are in her world.

A race on the verge of extinction…

Dem’s only goal is to protect his people, especially since a deadly bio-weapon decimated their population. Only a handful of women survived, and every day is a fight to rebuild. With Sanah’s empathy and her sister’s rare ability to heal, they could be the salvation Dem and his people have been looking for.

A dangerous secret that could destroy everything…

But how can Sanah trust Dem with her life? Especially when he’d kill her if he knew the truth.

Pirate Bound is a short prequel novel to the Telepathic Space Pirates series. It is a standalone story within the series.

For those into Sci-Fi romance (with steam). This is a debut by Carysa Locke (a writing duo) and well written.

It's a short but complete story, a prequel to a new series. Sanah and her sister are on the run from their dangerous brother when they meet the pirates that live on the fringe of their society. The pirate King and his Security Chief, Dem, assure the sisters they will be safe. The pirates themselves are at war with the world the sisters come from.

There is enough world building and the Talents are explained. Dem has very unique Talents and this makes his attraction to Sanah dangerous.

I liked Sanah and Dem together. Although short, it is romantic and very interesting.

I pre-ordered the first book, Pirate Nemesis, to be published August 2, 2016. I can't wait.
