Person of Interest (A Celeste Eagan Mystery) by Emery Harper

Posted by [email protected] on August 29, 2016 at 8:00 AM Comments comments (0)

Follow the zany antics of Celeste Eagan: prep school theater teacher by day, amateur sleuth by night. The first book in a new series from author Emery Harper, full of mystery and mayhem.

Just last week, I was a regular single mom and drama teacher at Peytonville Prep with a semi-normal life. The only real drama I had to deal with involved my football-coach ex and his hussy girlfriend. And maybe deciding if I should take that full-time principal/actress job at the local playhouse.

Everything changed when I discovered my boss hanging in his office. The suicide turned out to be a murder and my ex went suspiciously MIA. I tried to find some answers, but all that got me was labeled a person of interest by the attractively uptight Detective Shaw Muldoon. Not exactly the way I was hoping to interest him, if you know what I mean.

Now my life is plenty exciting, if you count a stint in jail, several attempted break-ins, more dead bodies and the odd exploding car. Did I mention I also have my own personal stalker? It's becoming pretty clear that if I don't unmask the killer soon, my life won't ever be boring again…it will be over.

Janet's five star review:

This book really checks a LOT of my favorite (mystery) boxes. Lovely lady sleuth (check), great story (check), funny (check), hot yummy detective (double check). A new favorite for sure. This is the first Emery Harper book I read.

Celeste lives with her daughter Paige after her divorce from Colin. They both work at a prestigious school, she a theater teacher and he a coach, although the fact Colin's girlfriend Naomi works there as well is not too great. When the principal Chad is found dead - by Celeste - life changes really fast. The very handsome detective Muldoon has his eye on Celeste as an Person of Interest and Celeste keeps getting in his way when she decides to do some sleuthing of her own. An exploding car, someone searching her house and taking shots at her complicate her life, and the tingles she feels whenever Muldoon is near confuse her.

I like Celeste as the heroine and Shaw Muldoon is the perfect stern but attentive hero. There is some great banter between them and attraction... There is also her best friend, Eli, and intelligent daughter Paige. And Muldoon has a big family we as yet know nothing about.

The perfect start of - I hope - at least some more books.

For those lovers of romantic mystery I highly recommend this one.

Putting Out Old Flames (Pineville) by Allyson Charles

Jane Willoughby has a temper. Sure, in her day job answering calls for 911, she can keep her head no matter what the emergency. But when her ex appears on her doorstep on her first sick day in years, expecting her to act happy he’s her co-chair for the annual fireman’s ball, she feels a little righteous wrath is justified.

Chance McGovern broke up with her with a greeting card, for crying out loud. He doesn’t get to just sprout some washboard abs and put on a uniform and behave like any other tasty firefighter.

Jane has no idea what’s happened to Chance in the last nine years—and no interest in finding out. Not even a teeny-tiny spark. No matter how hot he is. Or how well he remembers the little things that make her laugh, and cry, and spontaneously combust.

And she’s going to be working with him one-on-one. At least there’s a fireman on call . . .

Janet's 4 Star Review:

This was a very pleasant surprise. It has a nice writing style, a brisk pace and was funny.

Jane and Chance were high school sweethearts but it all ended abruptly when Chance left town for college and ended it with Jane by postcard! Ten years later they meet again when Chance takes a job as assistant Fire Chief and Jane works as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. Seeing Chance brings back the feelings of hurt and rage for Jane and she is not eager to forgive and forget (even if she is still attracted to him). Chance also feels the sparks, but he has a little boy and (almost) ex-wife to deal with.

As they are both organizing the charity ball for the Pineville Fire Department in one month they are stuck with each other.

This is a second-chance story and it was well executed. There are some interesting secondary characters and there was no over-the-top drama. Nicely done!

Married by Contract by Noelle Adams

Three years into a five-year marriage of convenience, Jenn finds herself wanting something she never thought she'd want from her laid-back, ex-military husband. Sex--as a much-needed release of tension from her high-stress job. But weekly sex with Nick, despite their careful parameters, is likely to get messy eventually.

Ever since her father walked out on her as a child, Jenn knows never to assume the people she loves will stick around, so she's not about to trust Nick with her heart. She vows to stay strong, no matter how much intimacy develops between them in bed.

But what starts as a tension-reliever soon becomes so much more, until it threatens both their practical arrangement and the heart Jenn has worked so hard to keep safe.

 Four Star Review:

Jenn and Nick have been married for 3 years. But they don't have an ordinary marriage; they made a deal to be married for 5 years. Both stood to gain from it. Jenn is sort of an workaholic and Nick is a PI, after being in the military.

Because Jenn is having stress headaches, Nick starts to give her massages and one thing leads to an amendment of their contract: sex once a week is now allowed.

As ridiculous as it sounds, the story is actually told in a very plausible way. Jenn and Nick are likeable characters, even when Jenn is so unbending and always working. She has her reasons to keep her heart guarded. And Nick is a great, caring man. He also has reasons to keep his life uncomplicated and easy. But will they still keep to the five-year plan? Are they still married friends having sex or will it evolve into something so much more?

Married by Contract can be read in a couple of hours and has steamy scenes that are not too explicit.

No Strings Attached (Lexi Carmichael Mystery #8) by Julie Moffett

Oops, I did it again…

Leave it to me, Lexi Carmichael, to become a target for an elite organization of cyber criminals simply by being in the wrong place at the right time. As if I weren't already freaking out about planning my best friend's bachelorette party, I now have to keep my eyes peeled for people trying to kill me.

After accidentally intercepting a dangerous hack into the NSA and discovering the involvement of a foreign country in said hack, things begin to get seriously complicated. Diplomats, danger and spies, oh, my!

With Slash and my loyal friends by my side, I'm in a race against time to stop a team of sophisticated hackers on a deadly mission. My team of geeks is brilliant…but derailing an international plot for revenge will take everything we've got.

Janet's Five Star Review:

The Lexi Carmichael-series is one of my favorite series. The stories are very well plotted and crafted and the characters develop over the course of the series. Number 8 already and still going very very strong.

Lexi is attending HACK CON when she stumbles into a situation where it is clear national security is threatened. After an attempt on her life (again!) the situation escalates and soon Lexi and Slash are at it again to save the US against a very real threat, of course with the help of their friends.

During all this, Lexi is still planning Basia's bachelorette party and taking her duties as Maid of honor very seriously. I almost peed my pants laughing so hard at a very particular scene at a bridal shop. What I enjoyed most was the fact that Lexi and Slash really are center stage in this installment and that their relationship is growing. If you have not read one of these books yet, you are missing out on a great series!

Quote without trying to spoil :-) :

“Wow. I’m not sure what to say. Was there really an ambulance, fire truck and an insurance adjuster involved?” “Unfortunately, yes.”

Shannon's 5 Star Review:

Having been born and raised in Alabama, I can attest to the manners one is raised with. This was a wonderful read, but I must warn you, it is a bit of a cliffhanger.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book even if I did want to smack some sense into the main characters from time to time.

There are the ups and downs you'd expect along with some sweetness thrown in, and it's not just from the tea. This story truly gives you the "feels" and you'll love every moment.

Kris Calvert it's a new top me author and I have to say, I will be reading more.

 Cocky. Commanding. Powerful. Relentless.

Those four words all summed up West Rykman perfectly.

So did filthy, dirty, sexy, and addictive.

He was supposed to be my one night stand...not my new marketing client.

He was definitely not supposed to be back inside my pants, not that anybody told him that.

I knew one thing: What West Rykman wanted, West Rykman got.

 And he wanted me.

What happens in Vegas... might just make you stay.

5 Star review

This was my first book by Emma that wasn't part of the Holly Woods Files and I absolutely adored it!

Mia is on point as a person and extremely relatable to me me. She over thought everything. Seriously, what woman doesn't over think everything especially when things are going so well and the guy seems too good to be true?

She envisions every worst case scenario and it made her feel real to me because that is exactly what I do.

West... oh west is one hot piece of man meat and always knows what to say. Knows when to step back and when to push Mia. No matter how many times she tries to push him away and keep things on a professional level he is there to remind her how perfect they are together.

Just beware that you will want to dive into 'Stripped Down' as soon as your finish this book. This is Beck's book, West's business partner. And there is a bit of a cliff hanger.

Sex Hell by Joe Canzano

When Debbie de La Fontaine tries to spice up her love life by supernaturally tampering with her sex life, she is cursed to spend every future encounter in a magical place called “Sex Hell,” where the sex is ludicrous and amazing but the romance is scarce.

Her only chance for escape is through the stingy clues supplied by an obnoxious demon, and the only way to obtain the clues is by returning to Sex Hell again and again to have outrageous sexcapades with the man she most wants to avoid—or does she?

Sex Hell is an absurd comic fantasy about the confusion of relationships. How is love related to sex, and how is sex related to love—and do love and sex need to be related at all?

If you’re a fan of authors like Christopher Moore, Douglas Adams, Tom Robbins, Robert Rankin, or Terry Pratchett, give Sex Hell a try!

*This book contains profanity and adult situations*

Shannon's 4 Star Review:

You've read the synopsis and you know who the author is, so I'll tell that this book starts out really funny, then becomes entertaining rather than funny. I liked the concept but it was a bit hard to keep track of the characters in the beginning as out was jumping POVs and dry. After about a dozen chapters, it gets a lot better and overall I enjoyed it. If you want an eccentric take off love and sex, then definitely read this book.

Shannon's 4 Star Review:

Wow! What a tumultuous roller coaster of a story. Who knew so many things could happen at Disney World?

This book will make you happy, sad, and excited all art once. The only thing I didn't like was the few chapters of flashbacks. Overall a wonderful read that I recommend.
